WHY DO PEOPLE BUY FENCES?People purchase fences for many different reasons. Some of the most common reasons to buy one are containment, privacy, define a boundary or barrier, and aesthetics or resale. Each of these reasons plays into the styles of fence that a customer will eventually purchase. We will elaborate and get into more detail about each of these. The top two reasons people buy fences are to keep things in and keep things out.
Containment is most likely the number one reason that people purchase fences. Because so many people own pets and have children, containment is a huge factor in a family's decision to purchase a fence. We want our children and our pets to be safe. A fence is a great way to contain your children or dogs and prevent them from wandering into the street. A containment fence can be any height since the purpose is to contain. The most cost efficient options for this type are 4 foot high and 6 foot high. The prices for these types vary from as low as $10 per linear foot to as high as $20 a linear foot. A convex spaced scalloped fence is by far the nicest four foot high fence, though the french gothic picket is by far the most cost effective choice and is on sale. Your dog and children will be safe while your budget will not be depleted. A new addition to the family such as a dog brings smiles to many children. It also brings responsibility and expense. We are here to help minimize the expense part to your budget. Special latches can be installed that have a child safety switch on them, as well as self-closing mechanisms can be installed to automatically shut the gates when you child forgets so that the dog doesn't escape.
In today's society, even with the recession, countless numbers of houses and developments are being built every single day. The biggest problem with new developments and neighborhoods is that they bulldoze everything and then construct the homes so close together that sometimes you could reach out your window and touch your neighbor's house. A privacy fence does not have to be expensive. A solid dog ear fence is the most common and practical 6 foot high privacy fence that you can purchase. A solid dog ear fence is a great investment and because of the recession, it does not cost all that much more than a 4 foot high fence. Privacy is key in today's day and age. Maybe you have a patio or a deck and just want to enjoy your family and friend's company in private. Generally speaking, a privacy fence typically cannot be more than six feet in height without getting special permission from the town or city that you live in.
A third reason people purchase a fence is to create a barrier or define a boundary, such as a property line. One customer of ours enclosed his yard, specifically so that the neighbor's kids wouldn't play football in his yard anymore. A split rail fence is also a common choice to add some definition to a yard. It is typically chosen for its rustic look. A split rail fence is also called a farm fence sometimes, though it is much different from many of the typical farm fences. A 3-rail or 4-rail fence is actually a farm fence and not a split rail fence. Split rail fences are most common in the Charlotte, NC area, many people wrongly assume or think that a split rail fence is cheaper than other fences. If you are connecting your fence to existing fences, then it usually makes sense to match them. Many times a homeowner will erect a fence to prevent traffic through their yards. Sometimes children and teenagers will use a yard as a cut through, maybe to get to a friends house or to get to school. Whatever the reason, a fence is a great deterrent, and forces them to find an alternate route.
Some people merely want a fence to enhance their already beautiful backyard. A fence can add that finishing touch to a backyard. Maybe you are selling your property and want the yard to look complete or maybe you want it to appeal to buyers as an amenity. Whether it is for aesthetics and your own pleasure or for resale purposes and the future owner's pleasure, a wood fence is a great way to add value to your home. Every type of fence will add value, however, spending an excessive amount of money on something like a vinyl or aluminum fence will likely result in you losing money on the resale value. An aluminum fence for example could cost $8,000 and then only add $3,500 in value to the property. A wood fence could cost $2,500 and add the same $3,500 in value. The value is in the containment, privacy, barrier, and aesthetics, NOT in the material.
Staining or water sealing the fence is another option to enhance the final product and add to its life span. Whatever the reason may be, there is a style and type of fence that will fit your needs and budget. Visit our photos section for ideas and more information. |
